Knowing the Holy spirit
Last Sunday at Church we heard a talk on the human heart from an ordinary person. She has no great qualifications and is probably not known outside of our church circle. The talk proved one thing; we do not require long talks with many words, what we require is the Holy Spirit. Her talk was about half the length of the normal messages we receive but I am sure it had a much bigger impact. She spoke of the human heart and the refining statement was; ‘we and we alone have control of what comes into our hearts as the door latch to our hearts is on the inside.’ In other words nobody or nothing can enter into our hearts unless we let them in.
The Word tells us that in the end times people will run after knowledge. This may help in some areas but what is needed more than anything in this age, is the power of the Holy Spirit in our hearts and not just in our lives. As a speaker who is invited to places to speak we visit smaller churches and meet the people of the country. In some of these churches we have heard people speak who have no qualifications except that they are truly Born Again of the Spirit. I recall a man in the South Island of New Zealand who was leading the communion. He spoke from the knowledge of the Holy Spirit and from the heart of the Lord.
It is time to look for the Holy Spirit in our leaders and not just listen to the words that are spoken. In other words, is the message from the Lord or man? If it is from the Lord what are we going to do about it? File it away for another day or act on it?
We can act on and with the Holy Spirit, as He is many things and can manifest Himself in our lives in many ways, for example:
The Holy Spirit is:
He is our very life, Genesis 2:7 – God breathed His breath of life into us. All life comes from God. Every breath taken comes from the Ruach, the Breath of God. Without Him there is no life so if we want to have that life in all of its fullness then we not only need to acknowledge where that life comes from we need to open the door of our hearts. We need to let Him in and allow Him to create in us the new heart [Ezekiel 36:26] that He promised so long ago.
He is like a dove, Luke 3:22. The Holy Spirit descended like a Dove upon the Lord. We need not fear the Holy Spirit as He comes like a Dove settling upon our hearts. He does not force Himself upon us and we can easily chase Him away by the simple act of keeping our heart locked. We really do have control of the key to our hearts. There is an old children’s song with the line - ‘Open up your hearts and let the sun shine in.’ Maybe it is time to open up our hearts and let the Holy Spirit come in. But if we never open our hearts to Him, we will never know what God has in store for us. Take it from us, life with the Holy Spirit of God is a real adventure and one we would never have missed for the world. [John 14:7]
He is like a covering, Luke 24:49 - The Holy Spirit will settle upon you and cover you with the Power from on High, whose Power? God’s power, that’s whose. Yes the power God wants us to have to help us go through this life. Lives that will run into many things that could either turn us from God or destroy our lives completely. He is the One Yeshua sent to guide us in all things and give us His full discernment of knowing the difference between what is right and what is wrong. Psalm 119:66
He is like living water. John 7:38-39. Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. Yes living water, not water once drunk that leaves the body dry, but a living water that can and will stay for all time. A living water that satisfies the thirst of our soul for the knowledge of God. [Psalm 27:4] A river that only has one ending and that is the river of life that flows out of the New Jerusalem. This is the river of life [Revelation 22:1-2] I am sure the Lord was talking of. There is just one thing to remember, we are going up to Jerusalem therefore up river. To do this we need the Lord’s help and He sent the One who is able to help us navigate this river of life, The Holy Spirit.
He convicts us of sin, righteousness and Judgment John 16:8 - He will come to and convict the world of Judgment. To teach on sin is frowned upon in many of the churches of today, but it is something we all have to face up to one day and I pray I would face up to my short comings in this world and repent before I stand at the Judgment seat of God. [Mark 1:15] The Lord knows we have and do sin [Romans 5:8] and therefore sent the Holy Spirit to convict us of this fact. In doing so He gives us a chance to repent and to walk in righteousness before the Lord comes in all His glory to judge the living and the dead. [2 Timothy 4:1] As God takes no pleasure if we are lost from His kingdom, [Ezekiel 33:11] He has sent us the Holy Spirit to keeps us on the path that leads to salvation.
He is our Teacher John 14:26. He will teach you all things and teach He will, from the little things in life to the deepest thoughts about the Lord. He is a patient teacher and does not rush the student but takes them to the next step when they are ready. The Holy Spirit opens the scriptures to the most learned and to the lowly of mind. He makes the Word of God come alive to the point that each time we read the word we find new information. He teaches as required and directs to the next lesson with love and understanding. The works of the Holy Spirit as a teacher know no bounds as He leads us to the next level of understanding. We knew nothing of the Lord that day when we bent the knee to Him but as time has moved on and we look back, we are amazed that how much we have learnt and all because Yeshua did not leave us as orphans [John 14:18] but sent the Helper, the Holy Spirit. [John 14:26]
He is like a fire Acts 2:3. Tongues of fire settled on them as is taught by the Rabbis at the time when the Israelites stood at the Mount and they received the Ten Commandments. That fire and power of the Lord burnt out the sinners before Him. The fire of the Holy Spirit goes a step further; it burns out the sin in our lives. When a forest fire goes through the land it rids the land of the old wood to allow the new growth required to sustain the forest. The old is replaced by the new. As with the fire of the Holy Spirit it readies us for what is to come by ensuring there is nothing in our lives that can separate us from God. [Romans 8:38-39] The Holy Spirit has cleared the field so we can see clearly the sacrifice of Yeshua revealing the love of God so the growth of the Lord can occur in our lives. Halleluyah.
“These things I have spoken to you while abiding with you. “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful. “You heard that I said to you, ‘I go away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced because I go to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. “Now I have told you before it happens, so that when it happens, you may believe. [John 14:25-29]
