Come Holy Spirit Come
Shavuot – Pentecost
The fourth feast of the Lord is upon us, the Feast of Pentecost, the time when the Israelites came out of the desert and stood before the Lord their God at the foot of the mountain, the very mountain that Moses ascended to speak with the Lord. Moses was given certain commandments, commandments that changed the course of history. These commandments took lost and wandering people and gave direction to their lives, a direction that placed their whole being onto their creator and not themselves.
The fire burned on the mountain and the people shook with fear [Exodus 19:10] as Moses came face to face with the Creator God [Exodus 19:21] and God wrote; You shall have no other God besides me; you shall not worship any other god; You will not make a graven image and worship it; you will keep the Shabbat holy; you will honour your parents; you will not steal; you will not murder; you will not seek after what others have; you will not commit adultery; you will not give false witness. [Exodus 20:1-17] They had never had such direction before and like today they could not keep these commands as they were like us, weak in spirit [Psalm 142:3] and very soon went astray. [Exodus 32:7]
Time passed and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. [John 1:14] The people saw the Word in action and followed the Word and when the pressure came upon them to stand by the Word, they failed. [Luke 22:60] Even after the crucifixion of our Lord they hid in fear [John 20:19] even though the Lord Himself said He would be with them always. [Matthew 28:20] Then He told them to wait in Jerusalem until the power from on High came upon them. [Luke 24:49] Yeshua said He would not leave them as orphans and He didn’t. [John 14:16-17] So what were they gathering in Jerusalem for at that time? Yes we read that that a hundred and twenty people gathered in a room forty days after the crucifixion and there they chose Mathias to replace Judas, the one who had betrayed the Lord. But the main reason for them being there was the Feast of Weeks that was about to occur.
When the day of Pentecost came, [Acts 2:1] in fact it was ten days after the Lord’s ascension at the time of Shavuot [Feasts of weeks] [Leviticus 23:15-16] they would have gathered at the place commanded of them by God to gather at His House, the Temple. [Luke 2:49] The very place they were commanded to go to three times a year. [Deuteronomy 16:16] Yes they had to gather at the Temple courts for these Feasts of the Lord, Passover, Shavuot and Tabernacles. And then as they gathered with possibly up to two million people plus, people from the entire known world who gathered in Jerusalem at that time something happened.
This gathering was not unlike when the people gathered at Mount Sinai all those years before. Some heard the message and some did not as out of this multitude of people three thousand responded to what they saw and experienced, when the Power from on High fire fell on the people. Tongues of fire swept across the people and their hearts were stirred and what was told to their people on Mount Sinai would have become clear to them. They now had the Spirit of truth to direct them in all things and at all times. [John 14:26] The Disciples went from frightened little men [John 20:19] to men of power and purpose and to spread the Gospel near and far. The Word had come to them in the form of Yeshua, they now fully understood that Word and now acted upon it.
The Ruach, the Spirit of God, came and breathed new life into mankind. [Genesis 2:7] Now God was covering them with a power that gives strength to all in all situations. [Luke 24:49]. Out of their hearts flowed rivers of living water, water of life that has been watering hearts into growth ever since. [John 7:38] The Comforter came to comfort in all situations as we go through life and give strength. [John 16:7]
The Holy fire settled on each person [Acts 2:3] as He can on us and burns deep into our hearts with His truth, His love, His peace. Fire may seem to destroy as in burns through a forest but once the fire has done its work there comes new life. The rubbish has been removed giving way for the sun to settle on the forest floor warming the seeds that have fallen over the years. As the ground warms growth occurs as it does with us after the Holy Fire of the Lord has burnt up all the rubbish we have gathered upon ourselves over the years.
Then we can see clearly as the Lord works on giving us a new heart and a new spirit, [Ezekiel 11:19] one that is open to the warmth of the Son into our hearts [2 Corinthians 1:22] and the growth can start. Tongues of fire [Acts 2:3] settled on each person to bring new life to each and every person, as did the fire on the mountain in the time of Moses. [Deuteronomy 9:15] The Disciples received power to be able to do what they had been told to do as they stood on another mountain. [Matthew 28:16-20] This is the power of God that is still blowing across the world today no matter what we may think and regardless of what is happening around us. We just have to lift our hands in praise to the Almighty God and we can feel, not a gentle breeze but a mighty rushing wind. [Acts 2:2] We can raise our hands and take hold of that power with both hands and live. [2 Corinthians 3:6]
We are the temples of the Holy Spirit, [1 Corinthians 6:19] yes He lives within us [2 Corinthians 1:22] and therefore we are to live as he directs or reject His life-giving gift. Yeshua said that His words would never pass away. [Matthew 24:35] The Holy Spirit came upon the hearts of the people to turn those hearts from stone to flesh. [Ezekiel 36:26] When the commandments were first written they were on stone [Deuteronomy 9:10] and this in itself was an indication of what the hearts of the people were like at that stage. Things did not get any better by the time Yeshua came along as the people still would not listen to what was being spoken to them. [Ezekiel 20:8] So finally the Holy Spirit came not only upon, but also within, breaking through our hard exteriors and making us new creations in Messiah Yeshua. [2 Corinthians 5:17] Now we not only stand at the Mountain of the Lord we stand in the very presence of His Holy Spirit where we not only have all of God’s commands that He gave so long ago, but now we can understand them know what is required of us within these commands and to live as commanded. [Romans 14:8]
I would suggest before we seek after the gifts God can bestow on us we must first seek the fruit of the Spirit. Then and only then can we be counted worthy to work in the Kingdom of God. Let us once more renew our acceptance of the Father in our lives through the death and resurrection of Yeshua and live as He lives and as He wants us to live. Live with the Power from on High, holding up and standing firm on the Word and be overcomers in all things and live within the fruit that God gave to all. Yes with the fruits of the Spirit let us celebrate the new life we can have in embracing His fruits such as: love, gentleness, self control, patience, joy, peace, goodness, kindness and faithfulness. For then there will be joy and the source of that joy in our lives, God Himself.
I waited patiently for the LORD; and He inclined to me and heard my cry. He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay, and He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; many will see and fear and will trust in the LORD. How blessed is the man who has made the LORD his trust, and has not turned to the proud, nor to those who lapse into falsehood. Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders, which You have done, and Your thoughts toward us; there is none to compare with You. If I would declare and speak of them, they would be too numerous to count.
