Create in me a clean heart
Based on Psalm 51: 7-13
The Holy Spirit has renewed His presence in our lives as we celebrated Pentecost last week, but as I thought of this event in God’s time line I thought of Psalm 51 and the cry of King David when he said: Purge me with hyssop, and I will be clean. Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Wash me with hyssop, [Exodus 12:22] a direct reference of the blood of the Lamb being placed on the doorpost of the home of the Israelites with Hyssop. Surely this should be the cry of us all, “Wash me with Hyssop and cleanse me Lord.” Remember we the washed and cleaned by the Blood of the Lamb [Revelation 22:14] can enter into the Holy of Holies [Hebrews 10:19-20] and remember we can only pass through the doorposts of the Holy of Holies by that very blood, the blood spilt for you and me at the Cross. [Acts 4:12]
Let me know joy and gladness; with the Holy Spirit within us we should have the joy of the Spirit as we remember: The joy of the Lord is my strength. [Psalm 28:7] It is by His joy placed in our spirits that we have His strength to overcome. Let the bones that you have broken rejoice. In our brokenness we can rejoice in all things and at all times. [Jeremiah 16:19] I once met a man who had been born with no hips. He could not walk upright so walked on all fours. You could see the joy of the Lord flowed from him to the people. He was not young and I asked the Lord if I could pray for His healing. The Lord did not heal him but empowered him to go to his people to take the good news near and far all due to the joy in his heart regardless of his infirmity.
Hide your countenance from my sins and erase the record of my iniquities. Hide yourself Lord from my sins and forgive me. [Psalm 19:12] We can take a big lesson from these words made to our Lord, because if we confess our sins He will forgive. [1 John 1:9] This is what the Gospel is about, it is for us as individuals kneeling before God and asking forgiveness.
The Holy Spirit was sent to reveal all things to us including our heart and the condition of our attitude. David cried, “God, create a pure heart in me, and renew a right attitude within me”. The Holy Spirit came to do just that for all people with the Fruits He bestowed on to us: Love, peace, joy, kindness, self-control, patience, faithfulness, and gentleness. All fruits of the Spirit, [Galatians 5:22-26] if we grow and cultivate this within us, (1 Corinthians 6:19-20] surely this must go a long way to spreading the Gospel to the world as David cried and Yeshua commanded.
Do not cast me from your presence; do not take your Holy Spirit from me. Yeshua said I will send the Helper to you, [John 15:26] He did and great power came upon the people. [Acts 2:1-2] This power is there for us today. [Acts 2:38-39] The fire fell upon the people as they gathered to celebrate the giving of the Ten Commandments. The very commandments they broke within hours of receiving them [Exodus 32] as we continue to break them today. And there is the reason the Lord came to teach, to show and to sacrifice Himself [John 10:18] so we can be forgiven of our sins, as we are weak in keeping the teachings of the Lord and we are saved by grace not by our own efforts. I praise the Lord for this.
Within that weakness we have the Power of the Almighty God Himself within us, teaching, convicting and leading us in the things of God. [John 16:8] Getting us closer to the truth of His Word and how we as His Children [John 1:12] should behave. We don’t need to know who we are in the flesh to succeed in the Lord; the past is the past because Yeshua has given us a marvelous future regardless of the past, when we confess Him as Lord. [Romans 10:9-13]
David continued; Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and let a willing attitude control me. We have confessed Yeshua as our Saviour but start to wander from the truth and then, Pentecost and the Power from on High comes burning into our Spirits and the joy is once more there for all to see. [Hebrews 4:12] Our attitude can be one without light to one of burning on a hill for all to see. [Matthew 5:14] Because then we can fulfill the very commands of the Lord, words outlined in this Psalm 51 when David asked to be renewed in the power of the Lord.
Then I will teach transgressors about your ways, and sinners will turn to you. What a statement! Sinners will return to you when we teach the ways of the Lord. Like they did towards Paul, Peter and the rest of the Disciples as they spoke and even died for the faith of knowing the end is not the end but only the beginning of eternity, where we will live with the Father in His House forever. This is what David looked forward to, as we can also through Yeshua, our Passover Lamb. [1 Corinthians 5:7]
Psalm 51:14-17 Deliver me from the guilt of shedding blood,
God, God of my salvation. Then my tongue will sing about your righteousness. Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. Indeed, you do not delight in sacrifices, or I would give them, nor do you desire burnt offerings. True sacrifice to God is a broken spirit. A broken and chastened heart, God, you will not despise.
