Why I Believe
In every storm I believe a prayer is heard, these words are from a song called “I Believe”. Today I would like to look at why I believe. In fact I think the Lord is asking that question of us all. There is no simple quick answer to this question and every person will have a different answer. To some my answer could be long and complicated but to me it has been such a wonderful journey of discovery. From that day when I was a very small boy and I heard about Yeshua for the first time and some seventy years later I teach of the wonders of Him.
There is so much to see in this world that speaks of the hand of God, [Psalm 27:4] in fact every living thing speaks of the Lord, His wonderful creative power. [Isaiah 45:18] But in those storms when everything is dark and the rain and wind batters our lives and we can't see a way out, we just have to remember that the Lord can calm every and any storm. [Luke 8:24] For me there have been many storms in one way or another. However since I have known the Lord I can see how He was always there but my eyes were closed to His Wonders. [Romans 11:8] Then one day He opened my eyes and I saw what we have, what I had, and the rest is history. [John 9:30]
Now when I stand on the seashore or see the trees blowing in the breeze, and the seeds that fall from the mighty Oak Tree that we are told grow into mighty Oak Trees. My question has always been how does a tree know how high to grow from such a little seed? God’s hand can be seen in everything we can see and touch. From the eagles that nest in the mountains to the squirrel that stores its food for the winter. Just seeing the wonders of God is a very good reason to believe. [Romans 1:20]
But then there is more because that is only the physical world, but what about the spiritual world? God has given us such a beautiful place to live but there is more to come. A much greater place where the light never fades [Isaiah 60:19-20] and there is no more sickness or pain. [Revelation 21:4] So how do we get from the physical world to the world to come, what about what is in between? In between is life, we are given choices and it is with those choices we have decisions to make. [Joshua 24:15] It took many years for myself to make the choice to follow the Lord but when I did it was the greatest thing I ever did. [Micah 4:5]
I thought back to those storms that the Lord had brought me through. Like the time I nearly choked on a piece of candy and saved by being tipped upside down. The day I nearly drowned and was saved as I was sinking below the waves, or when our school bus was hit head on by a truck and the bus was wrecked beyond repair and we all walked away from it with just a few cuts and bruises. Then the day I was diagnosed with cancer melanoma and the diagnoses was not good. I suppose one of the biggest storms I have faced and after a lot prayer and two operations the surgeon said: “I believe you are healed”, words that have rung in my head ever since. [Psalm 30:2] This is another one of the many reasons why I believe.
We have a mighty God who hears us in our darkest times and puts a smile on a face that has not smiled for years. He dries those tears of hurt and pain and unforgiveness. [Psalm 103:3] He forgives our darkest moments and for going far from Him. He is calling all to come to Him and the distance we have gone from Him will never be too far for His voice and His love to be heard. [Luke 15:11-24] This is why I believe.
One day in God’s mercy we was decided that we needed more than just words, we needed to see action. God has spoken down through the ages to many people and they experienced miracles, signs and wonders. [Daniel 6:27] Prophecies were and are still being fulfilled and the greatest of these was the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord. [1 Corinthians 15:12-19] With the many times I have stood in front of the empty tomb [Mark 16:6] in Jerusalem and walking where the Saviour of the world walked, I know why I believe.
God took His only begotten Son and gave Him as the perfect sacrifice for you and me. [Hebrews 9:14] And in all that pain He cried out “Lord forgive them for they do not know what they do”. [Luke 23:34] If He can forgive me - a sinner and all I have done, [Romans 3:23] how I abused His love as I was growing up and walked away from Him as a young man and He still called out to me, [Matthew 11:28] then I know why I believe. His love is so strong and His voice so gentle and His presence so powerful and over coming, all of which I have experienced, I have no other choice then to believe. I believe because He is true to His promises His word is never wrong [Psalm 18:30] and by walking on a beach looking at His power in the morning sunrise or seeing an image of Him at the moment of birth, [Genesis 1:27] then what else can we do but believe? Let us all take a moment and reflect on all the things and wonders of the living God, His power, His promises, His love, which is there for each and every one of us as we walk through the darkness and out into the light- His LIght.
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
